About the Original Artwork
“Secluded Dwelling by the Clear River” (Qingjiang Youju Tu) by Shen Zhou depicts a scholar living in seclusion among tall pines and plank bridges along a winding river. According to the artist’s inscription, it was painted as a gift for an old friend who had built a home by the river: “A thousand peaks float purple and green above the river; towering pines are mirrored in the clear stream.” The original, ink and light colour on paper, is recorded in the collection of the British Museum.
Meaning
A celebration of friendship and of a peaceful life close to mountains and water.
