About the Original Artwork
“Travelers among Mountains and Streams” (Xishan Xinglü Tu) by Fan Kuan is one of the most famous paintings in Chinese history. A colossal peak fills the upper half of the scroll, a thin waterfall falls from its cliff, and below, a tiny mule train of travelers passes along the road, dwarfed by nature. The artist’s signature was discovered hidden among the leaves in 1958. The original, ink and light colour on silk, is in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei.
Meaning
Majesty and permanence: the mountain as a symbol of strength and steadfastness.
