About the Original Artwork
“Lofty Mount Lu” (Lushan Gao) was painted by Shen Zhou in 1467, at the age of 41, as a 70th-birthday gift for his teacher Chen Kuan. Mount Lu stands as a metaphor for the teacher’s lofty virtue: densely layered peaks built with “hemp-fibre” brushstrokes in the manner of Wang Meng, ancient pines and red trees, and a waterfall plunging a hundred feet into the stream below. Shen Zhou’s long poem praising his teacher is inscribed at the top. The original, ink and colour on paper, is in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei.
Meaning
A painting of gratitude and respect: towering mountains symbolise steadfast character and long life.
