About the Original Artwork
“Pine, Plum and Two Cranes” is a hanging scroll by the Qing-dynasty bird-and-flower painter Shen Quan, painted in his later years. Two red-crowned cranes, one looking up and one bending down, stand beneath an old pine beside blossoming plum, bamboo and rock, rendered in fine brushwork and rich colour. The original, ink and colour on silk, is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing.
Meaning
Pine and crane are the classic Chinese symbols of longevity, and the plum blossom of resilience and purity: a traditional birthday and blessing painting for a living room or entrance hall.
About This Reproduction
This is a high-quality giclée (fine-art print) reproduction on xuan paper, not an original antique or hand-painted artwork. Our scroll is enlarged from the original and is not actual size. Each piece is made to order and inspected before shipping.
About the Artist
Shen Quan (1682–after 1762), also known as Shen Nanpin, was a Qing-dynasty painter of birds, flowers and animals. In 1731 he was invited to Nagasaki, Japan, where he taught for three years; his style, the “Nanpin school”, had a lasting influence on Japanese painting.
